As another academic year winds down, we’re proud to spotlight one of the standout seniors in the OU Esports community: Kenneth Thompson, a computer science major with a minor in mathematics, graduating in May 2025.
Starting Strong
Kenneth’s journey with OU Esports began during his freshman year when he secured a spot on the Valorant Academy team. From day one, his passion for gaming and dedication to growth were clear. Over the next two years, he played as a core team member before stepping into a leadership role as captain and in-game leader during his junior year. Beyond the digital arena, Kenneth also contributed to the community by working at the OU Gaming Venue, becoming a familiar face to many in the space.
Highlights and Growth
One of Kenneth’s most memorable moments came during a trip to Oklahoma State University for the Bedlam showdown when he and his teammates carpooled up to compete—a perfect blend of competition and camaraderie. Watching the OU Esports community grow, especially with the opening of the venue, has been a highlight for him, bringing more eyes and energy into the program.
In his final year, Kenneth focused on lifting others up. He worked closely with his teammates to prepare them for scholarship opportunities, making sure the next generation of players had the tools to succeed both in-game and academically.
Challenges and Takeaways
Like many student leaders, Kenneth balanced multiple roles:academics, leadership, and competitive play. One of his biggest challenges was improving at Valorant while managing shifting team rosters and maintaining consistency through annual changes.
Through it all, OU Esports gave Kenneth more than just experience—it gave him a support network, both personally and professionally. He credits the organization with helping him find lifelong friends and the confidence to pursue a career in gaming.
Parting Wisdom
When asked what he’s most proud of, Kenneth points to the team culture he helped build—one focused on cooperation and communication over raw skill. It’s a legacy of mentorship and collaboration that he hopes will continue to shape the community after he graduates.
His advice to new members?
”“Don’t be scared to be yourself and give ideas. The community leaders will listen, and if it sounds good, they’ll try to make it happen.”
What’s Next?
Kenneth plans to stay close to the game he loves—Valorant—as he sets his sights on working in the gaming industry, with dreams of joining Riot Games and applying his firsthand experience to future agent development.
